Update: I got my breast pump, read about it here!

This weekend, Peter & I took a birthing class. Yes, I know this is my 3rd baby…but it has been a while since I gave birth and since this is Peter’s first baby, we thought it was a good idea to take it! Well, besides all the wince-worthy birthing videos we watched the one thing that I did learn was that insurance companies now have to PAY for breast pumps thanks to theĀ Affordable Care Act!

I was a little skeptical at first..so I did a little Googling and found this article & this one that verified that insurance companies are now mandated to pay for breast pumps for nursing moms!

I decided to call my insurance provider to find out more information. I called up Harvard Pilgrim member services and asked if my insurance policy covered breast pumps. The nice woman checked my policy and assured me that I was covered.

I had two options:

1. I could rent a hospital-grade breast pump for 3 months and it would be full covered…OR

2. My doctor could write me a prescription for a breast pump which I could keep. The only clause was that I had to purchase the breast pump from an in-network vendor. There were 2 in my area!

This is was literally the best news I’ve heard all year! So ladies, take that breast pump OFF your registry and call up your insurance provider and ask about your benefits. You may be entitled to a FREE breast pump!

  1. i tried 2 months ago to get a breast pump through my insurance company (aetna), they would only pay for a manual pump. sorry, but a manual pump is not going to help me get back to work….i purchased the electric out of pocket. they have to pay for a pump but it doesn’t need to be a good one i guess.

You can also write it off as a medical expense on your taxes if you itemize and meet the medical expense deduction amount.
